MADURAI, JULY 14. Members of the Tamil Nadu Town Panchayat Workers Association today staged a demonstration in front of the Tallakulam Telegraph office here, protesting the government move to downgrade town panchayats into village panchayats. Led by R. Pitchaimuthu, district president, they said the government order, promulgated on June 11, ordering downgrading 566 town panchayats into village panchayats, would adversely affect town panchayat workers. They expressed apprehension that they might suffer the same fate of `salai paniyalargal.' Claiming that there were 14,000 workers in various town panchayats in the district, the members said the Government should clearly spell out whether they were entitled to various benefits such as regular pay, pension, etc., following the downgrading measure and sought a job security in the changed environment.
