The seventh batch of the MBA programme at the R.L. Institute of Management Studies had a unique way of introduction between the students and the faculty on the first day. Held under the shadow of coconut trees, the get-together was named `know your classmates better' wherein all new students interacted with one another informally. At the end of the programme, they spoke about the experience and with whom they interacted. The faculty was not kept away from the meet. As part of the orientation, the teachers and students got closer through the `know your students better' programme. The faculty members interacted with the students individually and assessed their interests, strengths and weaknesses. The college now plans a training programme after obtaining the assessment report. The fresh students were taken around the campus to make them understand the facilities and features of the institute. The chief guest was B.T. Bangera, Managing Director, Hi-tech Arai, who urged the students to be change-agents. He also suggested that students must live, learn and relish continuously while on the college campus. G. Subramanian, Director (Academic), and various faculty members participated in the interaction meet.
The students moved from classrooms to the fields to do service. The students of the Yadava College and the doctors of the Oomachikulam Veterinary Hospital conducted a special camp on July 6 for cattle of Chichiluppai, an adopted village of the college. Various procedures like deworming, artificial insemination and infertility treatment were performed on cattle by a team of doctors led by Vairavasamy and Vijayaraghavan. Students educated the villagers on identifying contagious diseases and rendering treatment for infected cattle. Cows, buffaloes, goat and dogs were treated during the camp. G. Thiruvasagam, Principal, presided and the Vice-Principal, S. Shanmugiah, inaugurated the camp. The faculty members, K. Kannan and P. Rengan, organised the camp. S. Sathyabama, a third-year student, proposed a vote of thanks.
A one-day workshop on `effective and efficient teaching' was conducted by the Sethu Institute of Technology, at Kariapatti in Virudhunagar district, for the faculty to enable them to handle classes more effectively. The topics covered in the training programme were self-analysis, self-esteem, communication skills, identifying core problems, taking initiatives, developing self-confidence and avoiding unreal expectations. The Principal, A. Elango, said today's teachers had many advantages as in the earlier days when no training programmes were conducted and they had to learn on their own. A total of 28 teachers from various departments participated in the programme. The course facilitator was G.P. Rajamani, Dean, Human Resources.
The Department of Personnel Management and Industrial Relations of the Madurai Institute of Social Sciences organised a seminar on the relevance of human resource practices in information technology industry. P. Murugesan, Deputy General Manager, HCL Peripherals, spoke on new roles and responsibilities of HR managers in industries. He called for gearing human resource systems to face challenges and expressed the view that HR managers should be required to perform the role of business managers than traditional roles in personnel management. The chief guest suggested that creation of a desirable organisational climate was necessary in which people as human resources could contribute to achieve organisational goals. D. V. P. Raja, founder-director, P. N. Narayana Raja, Principal, and T. K. Muthuvenkatraman, coordinator, spoke.
