The Mahatma Gandhi University is considering a proposal to expand its examination wing in view of the increasing complaints of delay in the conduct of examinations and publication of results. The syndicate meeting to be held on July 20 will discuss steps to improve the performance of the examination section. It is learnt that the syndicate will recommend appointing more personnel in the examination wing. It is also likely to recommend introduction of new sections to deal with matters related to various examinations conducted by the university. Faced with shortage of staff in the examination wing, the university recently urged the Government to recruit more personnel. But the Government has not accepted the proposal citing financial constraints. Despite Government restrictions, a section of the syndicate has suggested that the university go ahead with its plans of expanding the examination wing. The Vice-Chancellor, Cyriac Thomas, has asked the Pro-Vice Chancellor to go into the complaints regarding the conduct of examinations and publication of results. The syndicate will also discuss reports of lapses in the conduct of examinations. Students of the Maharaja's College opened a "janakeeya" canteen on Wednesday as a mark of protest against the absence of a full-fledged canteen on the campus. The students have been demanding reopening of the canteen which has been remaining closed for the last several months. The organisers of the canteen offered hot tea to visiting students on the inaugural day. Students say that a canteen will be of help especially to those students who cannot afford food from hotels. The college authorities say that it will be difficult to reopen the canteen without clearing the electricity arrears incurred earlier. St. Paul's College, Kalamassery, was all geared up when the peer team from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) visited the campus on July 10 and 11. The Vice-Chancellor of Gulbarga University, N. Rudrath, was the chairman of the peer team. The team interacted with the Principal and members of the advisory board, various departments and college office. Discussions were also held with students, parents and alumni of the college. The team gathered information regarding the curricular, co-curricular and students support services available at the college during their interaction. The team inspected the girls retiring room, canteen, playgrounds and fitness centre. The Chairman of the peer team handed over the report to the principal at the exit meeting. The council is likely to announce the grading awarded to the college within two months.
