Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to the United States Deputy Secretary of State, Richard Armitage's `apology' to the former Defence Minister, George Fernandes, for the latter's "humiliation" at U.S. airports (July 15). Having been subjected to the same experience in the U.S. and Britain long before 9/11, I must say that Mr. Armitage's apology is inadequate. S. Suchindranath Aiyer, Bangalore
Sir, Mr. Fernandes has clarified that he was not strip-searched but was asked to remove his coat, shoes and socks. Such checks at U.S. airports are routine and are carried out on all visitors. Why should Mr. Fernandes have been exempted? Gnanadesikan Subramaniam, Chicago
