Asian workers in Saudi Arabia abused: report

DUBAI, JULY 15. Asian workers in Saudi Arabia endure systematic abuse and discrimination while working in conditions resembling slavery, according to a Human Rights Watch report released on Thursday.

In its report, Bad Dreams: Exploitation and Abuse of Migrant Workers in Saudi Arabia, the New York-based group claimed foreign workers in the kingdom "face torture, forced confessions and unfair trials when they are accused of crimes."

In some cases, those detained were denied consular visits and made confessions under duress, signing Arabic-language statements they could not understand. Some of them were executed without prior notice to their embassies or families.

"The abuses we found against foreign workers demonstrate appalling flaws in the kingdom's criminal justice system as a whole," said Sarah Leah Whitson, executive director of the group's Mid-East and North Africa division.
