TIRUPATI: Sumo Victa, a luxury multi-utility vehicle from the Tata Motors stable was formally launched here on Thursday by N.V.D.S.Raju, Assistant General Manager, State Bank of India, Tirupati. The vehicle has a turbo-charged engine, power steering, power windows, car immobilizer and twin a/c, according to Hormuzd Mehta and Dharam Veer, senior officials of Tata Motors. The vehicle was released into the market through M.G.Brothers Automobiles.

zonal meeting

NELLORE: The zonal meeting of senior police officers will be held in Nellore on Friday, to review the law and order situation in the region. The Additional DGP (Law and Order), Dinesh Reddy, will chair the meeting. The DIG, Guntur, Anjani Kumar, and the Superintendents of Police of Nellore, Prakasam and Guntur districts will attend the meeting.

SC chief sought

for market panel

NELLORE: The United Action Committee of Dalits, Nellore, has demanded that a member from the scheduled castes be made president of the Agriculture Market Committee, Kavali, in tune with the policy of the Congress to promote the welfare of Dalits. At a meeting here on Thursday, the committee said that the community had put up a fight to face the TDP in Kavali, when nobody was coming forward to contest. Accordingly the market committee post should be offered to one, B. Nagaraju, who had worked for the consolidation of the Congress in Kavali area.

Ramdass, installed the new office-bearers at a function held here recently. The immediate past president of the club, G. H. N. HYDERABAD: All India Radio, Hyderabad, will relay the Asia Cup cricket matches to be played in Sri Lanka from July 16 to August 1 on Hyderabad `B' channel, medium wave 217.8 meters. The live running commentary can be heard alternately in Hindi and English from 2.05 p.m. onwards till end of play, according to a press release.

10 hurt as Congress, TDP

KURNOOL: Ten persons were injured in a clash between the supporters of Congress and the TDP at Boyilakuntla in Sirivel mandal of Kurnool district on Thursday. About 50 crude bombs were exploded while the MPP, Srikanth Reddy (TDP), allegedly fired from his double barrel gun.

One person, identified as Balarangaiah, received bullet wound.

According to reports, the Endowments Department auctioned temple lands, which had been under the control of TDP supporters for long. This time also the lands were secured by the TDP supporters but the prices went up because of active bidding by rivals. The group which was peeved by the escalation of lease amount clashed with rivals.

Janashakti proposes

names for talks

Hyderabad: The CPI (ML) Janashakti has proposed two names -- Keshava Rao Jadhav and A.B.K. Prasad -- as mediators on its behalf for the talks with the Government. A statement of the secretary of the party, Amar, stated here on Thursday that the names proposed by the PW were acceptable to his party too. Likewise, the supervisory committee on cessation of violence should include the names of B. Punnaiah (dalit leader), Jaya Vindhyala (PUCL), V. Hanumantha Rao and Lakshmaiah (journalists), Jayadheer Tirumala Rao, Kodanda Rao (OU), D. Burra Ramulu (KUC), Nandigam Krishna Rao (advocate), Bhoopal (actor), Nagaiah (ST and SC Employees Union), E.V.Chinnaiah (Ambedkarist), S.V.L.Narasimha Rao (former MLA) and Mohan (artiste).

Faction killings: special

teams to nab culprits

CUDDAPAH: Clues were secured into the killing of four persons of Lingamanenipalle village in Kondapuram mandal in an RTC bus near Proddatur and a manhunt was launched to nab the accused by constituting special police teams, the Superintendent of Police, V.C. Sajjanar, said here on Thursday.

Police parties undertook extensive search of vehicles and lodges in several parts of the district to trace the 11 accused, who were charged with the gory murders, he said. The involvement of hired assassins, if any, was being investigated into, Mr. Sajjanar said.

The bodies of the slain persons -- Putluru Narayana Reddy, Putluru Jayaramakrishna Reddy, Sana Venkata Sesha Reddy and Sana Veeranarayana Reddy - were sent to Tadpatri in Anantapur district after post-mortem, he added.

Physiotherapists hold

Hyderabad: The Indian Association of Physiotherapists held demonstration before the Directorate of Medical Education here on Thursday demanding a halt to the counselling of leprosy physiotherapy technicians for appointment to general physiotherapist posts in the Government.

In a letter to Principal Secretary, Health, S. Bhalerao, the association's convenor, Syed Imam Showkath Ali, termed `unjust' the decision of NTR University of Health Sciences to award bachelors degree in physiotherapy to those with an 18 month course while earlier the degree required four and half year's study.

Ryots gherao Transco official

CUDDAPAH: Farmers of Modemeedipalle in Pathacuddapah panchayat gheraoed the Transco Assistant Engineer, Venkateswarlu, and detained him in the village for seven hours on Thursday alleging that negligence of officials led to electrocution of four buffaloes during the past two days.

Two buffaloes each died on July 13 and 14 when they came in contact with high-tension electric wires that dangled about three feet from the ground level. When the AE and a helper visited the village in a jeep and tried to leave after removing the snapped HT wires, enraged farmers obstructed the jeep and detained the AE from 9 a.m.

The farmers left the place only after getting assurance on compensation.

Panchaloha idols stolen

CUDDAPAH: Three panchaloha idols of Sri Venugopala Swamy, Rukmini Devi, Satyabhama and a Sudarsana Chakram were stolen from Sri Venugopala Swamy temple in Pedda Gopavaram village in Gopavaram mandal last night.

A sweeper, Kondamma, who saw the temple doors wide open on Thursday morning, alerted villagers.

The temple priest, Saidurga Venkatappaiah, performed pooja and closed the temple last night. The temple has a watchman, Venkataiah (70). The Badvel Rural Sub-Inspector, Papaiah, and the Assistant SI, Ganganna, visited the temple.

ABVP activists' protest

MAHABUBNAGAR: ABVP activities attacked the BC Corporation office here on Thursday and ransacked the furniture, including computers and other office files, in protest against the failure of the BC Welfare Department in releasing scholarships.

Earlier, the activist, led by their leaders -- Gattu Mallesh and Ramu -- forced students of junior colleges in the town to boycott their classes in support of their demand.

KARIMNAGAR: Students of KIMS degree college have secured top ranks in Kakatiya University PG entrance examination.

A student of microbiology, Samarjeet Kaur (hall-ticket number 1280) secured fourth rank in M. Sc (microbiology). G. Raja Mahender Reddy (hall-ticket number 2598) secured first rank in M. Com. entrance examination, according to a press note issued by the college chairman, P. Ravinder Rao. He also said that several other students of the college have secured two-digit ranks in physics, chemistry, electronics, maths, MBA and MCA entrance tests.

killing wife

ADILABAD: The Adilabad District and Sessions Judge, Samudrala Govindarajulu, on Thursday sentenced Chukkabotla Dattatri of Beltharoda village in Tanur mandal to life imprisonment for killing his wife Sarada.

According to the prosecution, Dattatri killed his wife on April 14, 2001 by gagging and later axing her.

ADILABAD: As many as 445 police constables working in Adilabad district have been transferred. The transfers have been made through counselling and on request, according to a press release issued by the Superintendent of Police, Kripanand Tripathi Ujela. Transfer orders were issued on Thursday.

ADILABAD: The Ramai village branch of Sri Saraswati Grameena Bank in Adilabad mandal has achieved the distinction of being the first bank branch in the district to achieve 100 per cent coverage of farmers under institutional finance during this kharif. The branch consists service area of 13 villages, according to the Branch Manager, K. Laxma Reddy.

Plea to postpone exam

KARIMNAGAR: SDLCE students of Kakatiya University have urged authorities to postpone the MA (English) final year examination scheduled to be held from July 23.

In a press note on Thursday, the students stated that they were not prepared to appear in the examination in the month of July as every year they were held in August.

WARANGAL: Members of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) took out a rally from Arts College to the Collectorate, protesting against the Government's decision providing reservation to minorities. They later burnt the effigy of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.
