NEW DELHI, JULY 15. T. Subbarami Reddy, Rajya Sabha member from Andhra Pradesh, today urged the Centre to take additional steps to redress the problems being faced by farmers in the State especially to prevent suicides. Thanking the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, through a letter for visiting the State to meet farmers in distress, Mr. Reddy suggested that the Rashtriya Sam Vikas Yojna currently under implementation in Chittoor and Mahbubnagar districts be extended to the remaining eight districts under rain shadow area and in addition release 12.5 lakh tonnes of foodgrain towards wage employment and food security. He said besides declaring moratorium on all farm-related dues from all small and marginal farmers in drought affected mandals, fresh loans be sanctioned by commercial and regional rural banks. The other suggestions included assistance to restructure cooperatives credit and rehabilitation package; Rs. 300-crore special line of credit from Nabard and reduction of interest rate on farm loans to 5 per cent.
