Culture test reveals cholera outbreak

Tirunelveli July 15. The culture test conducted on two of the seven children of a private orphanage at Naraikinaru in Tuticorin district, who were admitted to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital with vomiting and diarrhoea symptoms on July 13, has shown an outbreak of cholera in the hamlet.

According to TVMCH sources, samples of the stools were sent for the test, which proved the outbreak at Naraikinaru.

"The Deputy Director, Health Services, Kovilpatti, Selvakumari, has been informed about this serious development to take all preventive measures in the orphanage and the village," TVMCH sources said.

Ms. Selvakumari told The Hindu that a medical team, led by Shanmugam of the Ottanathtam primary health centre was camping at the village and chlorination was done. Water samples were sent for an analysis.

House looted

Ramanathapuram July 15. In a daring incident, some unidentified miscreants struck at a house at Thondi and took away 25 sovereigns of gold and Rs.40,000 in cash from a bureau.

According to sources, the marriage of son of Abdul Kareem (67) was held in his house on Vellaimanal Street at Thond. After the marriage, Abdul Kareem locked gold ornaments and money in a bureau. But, the jewels and money were missing when he opened the bureau today.

On a complaint, the police have registered a case and taken fingerprints of over 30 persons of the marriage party who were sleeping in the house on the day.

Suicide alleged

Nagercoil July 15. A night watchman of the central store of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board at Parvathipuram allegedly committed suicide, hanging himself in the store on Wednesday night.

According to the police, Arunagiri Pandi, of Sankarankovil, took this extreme step, owing to a family dispute.

RDO enquiry

Tuticorin July 15. An enquiry by the Revenue Divisional Officer has been ordered to probe the "mysterious" death of T. Fatima (32) of Naattukottaichetty Street under the Tuticorin north police station limits.

The police said Fatima, mother of a one-and-a-half-year old boy, hanged herself today in the house of her father-in-law, A. Thaththuvasamy (67). Since the neighbours and the relatives of the victim reportedly told the police that she could have been beaten to death and she got married only three years ago, the enquiry has been ordered.

Token strike

Workers of the Tamil Nadu Arasu Rubber Corporation in different parts of the district, including Perunchani, Keeriparai, Manalodai, Parilaru, Chittar, Kallar etc., observed a token strike today, urging the Government to find an early solution to their five-point charter of demands.

The Anandhakrishnan, secretary, INTUC, estate workers, led the agitation.

Accreditation

Ramanathapuram July 15. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has conferred B+ status on Zakir Husain College at Ilayangudi near Ramanathapuram.

The team, which inspected the college in March 2004, lauded the efforts of the aided minority institution for the overall development of Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga districts.

Stamp paper case: youth held

Tirunelveli July 15. Two youths — M. Bilal (25) and S. Abdul Saththar (27) — both hailing from Sivakasi surrendered before the judicial magistrate court at Sankarankovil today. They were reportedly wanted in connection with two cases of alleged printing of fake stamp papers and counterfeit notes in the printing press of Mahaboob John, also from Sivakasi, who was arrested by the Corps of Detectives attached to the Karnataka police on July 9.

The judicial magistrate, Saravanakumar, remanded the two to custody till July 29 and they were lodged in the Palayamkottai Central Prison.

In the affidavit filed before the magistrate, Mr. Bilal, a close relative of Mr. Mahaboob John and who owned a screen-printing unit at Sivakasi, and Mr. Abdul Saththar, claimed that they were "innocent."

Mr. Mahaboob John, after getting "printing orders" from Nizamuddin, one of the accused in the case, allegedly distributed the "printing work" to 15 small units at Sivakasi. Mr. Bilal reportedly received a major portion of the "printing orders." The Central Bureau of Investigation, which is handling the case, is expected to file an affidavit before the magistrate within a day or two seeking custody of Bilal and Abdul Saththar for interrogation.

Charges framed against Vaiko

NAGAPATTINAM JULY 15. Charges were framed today against Vaiko, general secretary of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Ko. Si. Mani, former Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Minister, and K. Idumbaiyan, Communist Party of India leader, for allegedly assaulting the then All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader, Thamaraikani, at Siddharkadu near Mayiladuturai on May 19, 1984 in a byelection campaign. Velu Kubendhiran, counsel for Vaiko, said charges were framed against the three under Sections 147 and 148 (unlawful assembly and with deadly weapons, 323 (causing simple hurt) and 341 (wrongful restraint) of the IPC. Lawyers who appeared on behalf of the accused denied the charges before the Mayiladuturai judicial magistrate, Selvi D. Jayasurya. The magistrate posted the case to August 12.

DMK cycle rallies

CHENNAI JULY 15. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Youth Wing will organise cycle rallies all over the State from August 1 to 10 ahead of the party's Salem victory conference.

The deputy general secretary, M.K.Stalin, said the rallies, to be organised at the ward, hamlet, village, town and union levels, were aimed at publicising the Salem conference, slated for August 21 and 22.

Teachers to visit Delhi

A delegation of the Tamilaga Arambapalli Asiriyar Kootani (TAAK) led by the State president, Durai Thatchimamurthi, will leave for New Delhi to meet the Union Education and Finance Ministers to highlight the shortfall of teachers, resulting in closure of over 500 primary schools over the past nine years.

CHENNAI July 15. The State Government should declare the birthday of Kamaraj ``Students Day'' as he was instrumental in providing free education to all sections, said the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president, G.K. Vasan, here today. Participating in the 102nd birth anniversary of Kamaraj, organised by the TNCC Charitable Trust, Mr.Vasan said the mid-day meal scheme was first introduced by the late leader. It was high time that such a leader should be honoured by declaring his birthday as `Students Day.'' He said Kamaraj was never after power and he rose from a humble worker to the president of the All-India Congress Committee. His regime was the golden period of Tamil Nadu and the party workers should strive to bring back ``Kamaraj rule''. He distributed educational grant worth Rs. 5 lakhs to students on behalf of the trust. Earlier, he garlanded the statue of the late leader and offered floral tributes to his portrait at the party headquarters, Satyamurthi Bhavan.

Later in the day he honoured freedom fighters and distributed notebooks on behalf of the Council for National Integration.

The State unit of the party also organised functions throughout the day in memory of the late leader.

On behalf of the Tamil Nadu Government, Ministers, including the Public Works Minister, O. Paneerselvam, and the Finance Minister, C. Ponnaiyan, garlanded the statue on the Marina.

Inquiry

Dharmapuri July 15. Senior transport officials from Salem conducted an inquiry at the Dharmapuri RTO today following allegations of issuance of bogus driving licences. According to sources in the Transport Department, an official in the rank of Deputy Commissioner from Salem region conducted a detailed inquiry.

Sentenced

Krishnagiri July 15. The Chief Judicial Magistrate and Judge of the Special Court of Krishnagiri, V. Mani, on Wednesday, convicted and sentenced Syed Saliah to undergo an imprisonment of three years on charges of accepting bribe. According to the prosecution, Syed Saliah, a fireman of the Hosur Fire Station had demanded a bribe of Rs. 1,100 from Govindaraj (35) for issuing a no-objection certificate for setting up a cracker shop on October 10, 1995. Govindaraj preferred a complaint with the Vigilance police who laid a trap and caught Syed Saliah red-handed. A fine of Rs. 2,000 was also imposed on him.
