Municipal chairperson resigns

ALAPPUZHA, JULY 15. The Kayamkulam municipal chairperson, C. Chandrika Devi, has resigned.

The resignation was submitted at 10.15 a.m. today prior to the discussion on a no-confidence motion moved by the UDF in the Municipal Council. The discussion was to be held this afternoon.

Ms. Chandrika Devi, who was a councillor of the Congress, had left the party along with eight others ten months back. She won the chairman election with the support of 12 LDF councillors. In the 38-member council, Ms. Chandrika Devi had the support of 21 councillors. But the eight councillors who left the Congress rejoined the party recently. Following this, the strength of the UDF rose to 23 and they moved a no-confidence motion. She resigned as she lost majority.
