Kuditini villagers stage `rail roko'

By Our Staff Correspondent

BELLARY, JULY 15. Hundreds of people from Kuditini village, led by N. Suryanarayan Reddy, Kurgodu MLA, staged "rail roko" to protest against the proposed closure of a level-crossing on Kuditini and Kurgodu Road.

The villagers detained the Hubli-bound Amaravathi Express for about 50 minutes to register their protest against the move by the Railways.

The Railway authorities propose to provide a crossing facility at Kuditini Railway Station. As the train formation would come up to the level crossing of Kuditini-Kurgodu Road, they wanted it to be closed. People had to use the level-crossing at the other end.

People were against the move because taking a deviation would add 3 km to their onward journey and they would have to pay more for bus fare.

When the villagers insisted that the level-crossing should not be closed, an official of the Railways, who was present, suggested that an overpass or an underpass would solve the problem.

Mr. Reddy said that he would urge the Deputy Commissioner to convene a meeting within a week and wanted the Railway officials to participate in the meeting and find a solution to the problem.
