THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JULY 15 . A 24-year-old lion and a four-day-old tiger cub died at the city zoo today. Now, the zoo is left with eight lions and eight tigers, including two of the three cubs born on July 12. Of the eight lions, six are females. Of the two males, one is Simba, the arthritis-ridden youngster. The other male is more than 20 years old and in poor health. According to the zoo director, C. S. Yelakki, the zoo does not want its female lions to breed anymore as they are all of hybrid stock and thus, prone to producing defective offspring. The tiger cub that was found dead this morning, was the weakest one among those born on Monday. While the lion was cremated after a post-mortem, as per the norms of the Central Zoo Authority, the tiger cub was buried on the zoo premises.
