SURYAPET (NALGONDA DT.), JULY 15. The High Court Chief Justice, Devinder Gupta, has underlined the need for encouraging alternative dispute resolution mechanism to reduce pendency of cases in all levels of courts in the State. "Members of judiciary should strive hard to strengthen the justice delivery system and, at the same time, they should encourage amicable settlements between litigants," he maintained while addressing an impressive programme organised by the Bar Association, Suryapet, here on Thursday. Earlier, Mr. Justice Gupta inaugurated the Second Additional and Sessions court-cum-land reforms appellate tribunal, built at a cost of Rs.5 lakhs in the town. High Court Judges -- V. Eswaraiah, L. Narasimha Reddy - the Principle District and Sessions judge, K. Ashok Babu, and the Bar Association president, N. Sudarshan Reddy, were also present. Stating that courts were meant for litigants, not for advocates, the Chief Justice called upon members of judiciary to do their best to bring down the pending cases. He also said that the bar and bench should work in unison to achieve the purpose. Expressing serious concern over the "degradation of values" in the legislature and the executive, Mr. Justice Eswaraiah said that the judiciary was the only hope in the present juncture. "To some extent, the criminal justice system was also not able to cater to the needs of public. If this system fails to deliver the goods, it would lead to utter chaos," he warned. Apart from members of judiciary, MLAs -- V. Venkaiah and R. Damodar Reddy -- the Collector, K. Vijayanand, and the Superintendent of Police, N. Balasubramanyam, were also present.
