MAHABUBNAGAR, JULY 15. The district Collector, M. Jagadeeshwar, has instructed bankers to extend timely loans to farmers so that sowing could be undertaken as soon as the monsoon picked up. Addressing a meeting of bank officers on Tuesday, the Collector said banks must prioritise rescheduling of loans given to farmers and extend new loans for kharif in view of the adverse seasonal conditions. Banks must lend a hand to farmers who had taken small and long-term loans between 1998 and 2004. Farmers who had been unable to repay loans taken during the period due to crop failure would be given five years to repay them, he said. Mr. Jagadeeshwar said farmers must submit a written representation to bank officers asking them to postpone the repayment of the loan, and instructed bank officers to extend crop loans to at least 100 farmers not covered under the loaning program so far. He said tenants would be provided loans through Rythu Mitra groups and patta passbooks would be given to families of farmers who committed suicide. Graduates in Agriculture would get loans from agri-clinics, he said. The Collector said the district credit plan had been reversed and crop loans amounting to Rs. 418 crores would be extended this season. The Assistant General Manager of the State Bank of Hyderabad, Sampath Kumar, said farmers would be extended loans from banks according to rules framed by the Government. The deputy general manager of Andhra Bank, Ranga Rao, the Chairman of the Sangameshwara Gramena Bank, Maqdoom Mohinuddin and the lead Bank Manager, Ramabrahman, spoke. The Collector released a pamphlet containing details of the relief measures being undertaken by the Government.
