Confusion over admissions unprecedented: Karunanidhi

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JULY 15. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president, M. Karunanidhi, today said lakhs of students and their parents were frustrated because of the confusion over admissions to undergraduate courses in engineering and medicine.

Mr. Karunanidhi said the scale of confusion was unprecedented. It seemed it would be time for the first semester examinations when the admissions were completed, he said.

On the reports that the former Defence Minister, George Fernandes, was strip-searched twice in the United States, he said had it been a problem faced by a private individual, it would have been a different issue. But, Mr. Fernandes was in the U.S. in his capacity as Defence Minister. It was shameful that the then Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee, and the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, who were bending over backwards to please the U.S., pretended that they did not know about this incident, he said. This was a greater shame than what Mr. Fernandes was subjected to, he said.

Noting that Mr. Vajpayee had stated he was not aware of the incident then, Mr. Karunanidhi said it was painful that Mr. Fernandes did not inform the then Prime Minister of it on his return.
