Salman's off-screen heroism saves two lives

MUMBAI, JULY 16. Bollywood star Salman Khan proved samaritan for two youngsters who were trapped in a car accident in front of the actor's house in suburban Bandra early on Wednesday morning.

Salman rushed to help the three youngsters trapped in a Lancer that crashed into an electric pole in front of Galaxy apartments and removed them before he accompanied them to Lilawati Hospital, the police said.

Unfortunately, one of the three, Anzar Darvesh (17) succumbed to injuries, while his brother Turaib Darvesh (21) and friend Raunak (20) are admitted to ICU and recuperating.

The actor not only rushed the injured to hospital, but also informed the Darvesh family, police sources added. He also stayed in the hospital till early morning to assure proper care of the injured.

One of the injured Turaib is studying abroad and had returned to India for a small vacation trip, the police said.

Salman Khan had landed into a controversy in September 2002, when he was booked for wreckless driving leading to an accident with his imported Landcruiser, killing one person and injuring many in front of American Express Bakery in Bandra.

When contacted, Salman's father, noted script-writer Salim Khan told UNI that his son had done what was expected of him. ``If the two boys are saved, we would be the happiest people.''

Mr Khan said, `` My children have been taught to do whatever they can to help people in need.''

Salman however, refused to speak about the incident to reporters during a shoot at Film City yesterday.
