RAJAHMUNDRY, JULY 16. A three-day `Festival of Godavari,' reflecting the cultures of the East and West Godavari districts, is to be organised next month. The festival will coincide with the last three days of the Antya Pushkarams. This was decided at a Corporation meeting convened by the Commissioner, T. S. R. Anjaneyulu, to review arrangements being made for the ensuing Antya Pushkarams. The Mayor, M. S. Chakravarthy, spoke of the success of the Godavari Pushkaram and asked for the "same spirit and devotion" from officials. He said arrangements must be made according to the estimate that around 50,000 pilgrims a day were expected to attend the festival, which would be held at the Pushkaralarevu. Cultural, spiritual and religious programmes would be prioritised, he said. Mr. Chakravarthy said most pilgrims were expected to visit the bathing ghats at Pushkaralarevu, Kotilingala and Gauthami, adding that police security in these ghats was necessary. He said a deepotsavam would be organised to mark the beginning of the programme. Dr. Anjaneyulu said that unlike the Godavari Pushkarams, when all the departments worked together, the burden of the Antya Pushkarams would have to be borne by the Corporation. Sanitation, supply of drinking water and lighting would be on top of the agenda for Antya Pushkarams, he said. The Chairman of Standing Committee, Vemana Nagabhushanam, pointed out that a large number of pilgrims from Orissa would attend the Antya Pushkarams.
