Indian campaign in individual event ends

KOLKATA, JULY 16. Tetyana Berezhna of Ukraine put paid to the aspirations of Indian ace Dola Banerjee in the quarterfinals of the Olympic round elimination event of the XVII Golden Arrow Grand Prix archery championship at Antalya in Turkey on Friday.

More bad news came from the men's Olympic round elimination competition where all the three Indian men, Satyadev Prasad, Tarundeep Rai and Majhi Sawaiyan, were shown the door leaving only the two teams in the medal contention. The team championship would be held on Saturday.

According to information reaching here, eighth ranked Dola lost to top-ranked Tetyana at 100-108. Seventh ranked Rai was the lone men's archer to move into the round of 16 where he lost to 23rd ranked Stanislav Zabrodsky of Kazakhstan at 165-166. Earlier, Rai defeated 58th ranked Bo Steimann of Denmark in the first round at 162-156 before ousting 39th ranked Elias Cuesta of Spain in the second round at 156-154.

The most seasoned campaigner Prasad, ranked third in this meet, was a disappointment. After getting the better of 62nd ranked Vitaly Shin of Kazakhstan at 157-155 in the first round, he lost to 35th ranked Wietse van Alten of the Netherlands, the champion of the Italian Grand Prix this May, in the next round at 160-163. Forty-third ranked Maxim Yeliseev of Kazakhstan sent the third Indian entry, 22nd ranked Majhi Sawaiyan, packing at 155-157 in the first round itself.
