Meeting planned to settle cane farmers' arrears

By Our Staff Reporter

THENI, JULY 16. The Collector, Sunil Paliwal, today said a tripartite meeting among farmers, revenue officials and the management of sugar mills in the district would be convened shortly to settle arrears for cane supplied to the mills.

Addressing a grievance day meeting held here, Mr. Paliwal responded to an appeal made by sugarcane growers to take steps for settling arrears by saying that the report of the meeting would be sent to the Commissioner for Sugar for immediate action. Revenue officials informed that they would convene the meeting at the earliest.

Vannila cultivation would be taken up in 25 hectares with assistance from the Central Government in the district this year. The Spices Board in Bodinaickanur would supply vannila seedlings to farmers at a subsidised rate and cooperative banks would distribute loans to the farmers.

The Collector appealed to farmers to utilise the opportunity to raise vannila crops and boost farm income. He said heat-tolerant fruit varieties were ideal for the development of wastelands. No distraint proceedings would be initiated against farmers in connection with the repayment of loans.

Reacting to a charge on the delay in awarding compensation to farmers who had given lands for 18 canal projects, he said the disbursement of compensation had commenced recently.

Water would be released to Govindapuram, Ambasamudram and Balakrishnapuram tanks only after the completion of construction work in link canals.

Officials told the farmers that the Public Works Department has agreed to raise and strengthen the banks of Vallalnadhi River in Andipatti and the bunds of Puthukulam tank in Gandamanur.

Tenders were floated for the construction of check dams across Varattaru in Periakulam union, the officials said.

Of 108 petitions received from the farmers, Mr. Paliwal cleared 45 petitions immediately and advised officials to clear the other petitions within 15 days.
