CHENNAI, JULY 16. Favourites had a smooth opening round in the fourth Adyar Times Millennium FIDE-rating open chess tournament which got underway here on Friday. Among the favourites, International Master Poobesh Anand was the most impressive when he checkmated Girish Koushik with the black pieces in just 22 moves. FIDE Master K. V. Shantharam of Indian Bank had to struggle before winning his game while Bankmate K. Gopalakrishnan was the highest seed to lose in the opening round, beaten by D. Krishna Doss. Other winners included M. B. Muralidharan and O. T. Anil Kumar of Kerala and FM Joerg Schwalfenberg of Germany. Teenaged National junior champion and top seed M. R. Venkatesh of Bharat Petroleum won two pieces for a rook early in the game to wrap up the game in 44 moves with the black pieces against S. Elango.
