JAIPUR, JULY 17. Former Minister and legislator from Phalodi, Ram Narain Vishnoi is likely to be the Deputy Speaker of the Rajasthan Assembly. Mr. Vishnoi was the only MLA to file nomination for the post today, the last day for filing nominations. Mr. Vishnoi's nomination was proposed by the Chief Minister, Vasundhara Raje, Industries Minister, Narpat Singh Rajvi, Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Rajendra Rathore and Irrigation Minister, Sanwarlal Jat. A good number of members of the Council of Ministers in the State were present in the Rajasthan Assembly when Mr. Vishnoi filed four sets of nomination papers. The absence of any Congress leader on the occasion indicates that Mr. Vishnoi is not a consensus choice. As for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, Mr. Vishnoi's selection serves the purpose of representation to the Vishnoi community which has not been given a ministerial berth. The post of the Deputy Speaker has been lying vacant ever since the new BJP Government came to power in December, 2003. So far the House has been presided over by the Speaker, Sumitra Singh and a panel of chairpersons. A formal announcement of Mr. Vishnoi's election to the post is to be made when the Assembly meets on Monday.
