New twist to Birla family episode

KOLKATA, JULY 17. The Birla family has filed separate caveats at the District Judges Court and Calcutta High Court here seeking an opportunity to present their views if any legal move was made by R. S. Lodha, who has been bequeathed a Will by Priyamvada Birla of her assets worth Rs. 5,000 crores.

Sources close to B. K. Birla said even though the family would like to move the court to challenge the Will as announced by Mr. Lodha on July 12 in the presence of family members, they were not in a position to do so till a copy of it was available.

"How can we move court to challenge the Will if we do not know its contents like when was it made, who were the witnesses and their credentials," Birla group sources said adding the delay raised doubts about Mr. Lodha's intentions.

Meanwhile, despite the media offensive launched by Birlas, Mr. Lodha continued to maintain silence and remained inaccessible to the media.

Repeated attempts to contact him or his sons — A. V. and H. V. Lodha — have so far proved futile even though Mr. A. V. Lodha on Wednesday had told PTI that they would speak only after completion of the 13-day mourning period.
