Nobel laureate to

visit Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Harold Kroto, president of Royal Society of Chemistry and winner of Nobel Prize (1996), will visit Hyderabad later this year to interact with children. He will organise a science workshop for children here on October 28.

This was announced in a statement here on Saturday by Krishna Murty Inguva, Secretary-General, Asian Organisation of Education for Children. Prof. Kroto confirmed his visit in a letter to Mr. Krishna Murty.

Prof. Kroto is coming to India to participate in the three-day Asia Pacific education meet in New Delhi (October 25-27) where he will a chair a session on `IT versus education for children'.

YSR to launch scribes'

health insurance scheme

Hyderabad: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, will inaugurate the health insurance scheme for journalists on August 15.

The Minister for Information & Public Relations, Ali Shabbir Mohd, said at a press conference here on Saturday that the department had already released Rs.18 lakhs towards the Government share of the premium. Initially, the scheme would be applicable only to accredited correspondents, photographers and those from electronic media. While the yearly premium payable in each case was Rs. 1,400, the journalist would have to pay Rs. 700. The family could claim benefit up to Rs. 1 lakh per year, he said.

The Minister said the Government, in principle, had accepted the expansion plan of the Gopannapalli housing colony of journalists near Hyderabad which would benefit new members. District Collectors were asked to allot house sites to journalists at district level, he added.

Steps to streamline work at

Chief Minister's office

Hyderabad: The Chief Minister's Office (CMO) work is being streamlined further from Monday. A cell to receive memoranda from MLAs, MPs and other public representatives is being opened. The cell will be keeping tab on the issues raised thereof.

The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, meanwhile, directed officials not to press into service schoolchildren during his visit on either `Rajiv palle baata' or other programmes.

The Chief Minister also directed the departments employing people on contract to pave way for regular monthly payments.

Meanwhile, the MIM leader, Asaduddin Owaisi, met the Chief Minister and thanked him for bringing out a GO on reservation for minorities.

CITU lists demands

HYDERABAD: The Labour Minister, G. Vinod, said on Saturday that the Government would ensure protection of workers' rights and laws after holding discussions with their organisations.

He was responding to a memorandum submitted by a delegation of CITU State committee listing several demands. The delegation comprised Bhupal, P. Bhaskar and A.P. Nageswara Rao, secretaries of the union.

Its demands include payment of minimum wages, setting up of labour welfare board and beedi workers' welfare committee, according to a press release.

The CITU urged the Government to drop proposals to amend labour laws, scarp contract labour system and to strictly implement the Minimum Wages Act.

Three struck dead by lightning

Rajahmundry: Three girls, who were engaged in paddy transplantation in a field at Unduru village near Samalkota, died when lightning struck them on Saturday. Two others, who sustained burns, were admitted to hospital.

The district Collector, K.S. Jawahar Reddy, said he would see whether the families of the deceased were eligible for any help.

FDI: Left parties call for stir

HYDERABAD: A meeting of six Left parties held here on Saturday has called upon people to oppose the Government's proposal to raise the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) cap in telecommunications, insurance and airlines sectors and agitate against the move.

In a resolution adopted at the meeting, leaders of these parties said the Centre's decision would make India vulnerable to the control of foreign capital and work against the interests of people.

B.V. Raghavulu (CPI-M), K. Narayana (CPI), K. Sridhar (SUCI), N. Murthy (CPI-ML- Liberation), G. Vijayakumar (CPI-ML) and K. Venkateswara Rao (ML Committee) attended the meeting.

Naxalite surrenders

NALGONDA: A People's War member, Thota Srinivas (21) alias Siva alias Venkatesh, surrendered to the police in the presence of the Superintendent of Police, N. Balasubrahmanyam here on Saturday. He hails from Gannepalli of Valigonda mandal and worked as a labourer for sometime in Hyderabad. Later, he came in contact with the People's War.

Isolated rain forecast

Hyderabad: Nizamsagar received a rainfall of 5 cm on Saturday. There was also rain at a few other places in Telangana. It was isolated in coastal Andhra.

Visakhapatnam, Nandigama and Koida recorded a rainfall of 3 cm each; Dummagudem, Kandukur, Sriramsagar 2 cm each and Hanamkonda, Kalingapatnam, Kunavaram, Palair Bridge, Rayadurg 1 cm each.

There will be isolated rain in Telangana, Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra on Sunday.

Medical camp

ANANTAPUR: The heart valve bank of Satya Sai organisations in London is organising a free medical camp in Puttaparthi from July 18 to 24. A team of 30 doctors has arrived from London for conducting health check-up and necessary medical intervention at the camp. General health problems, eye and dental problems would be diagnosed and treated. An operation theatre has already been readied at the `dharmasala' where the camp is being organised.

M.Tech courses

TIRUPATI: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has accorded permission to Tirupati-based Sree Vidyanikethan Engineering College, affiliated to JNTU, to start M.Tech courses in Computer Science & Engineering and Electrical Power Systems from 2004-05.

SFI for report on schools

TIRUPATI: Following the incident at Kumbakonam, the Students Federation of India has appealed to the State Government to take measures to prevent occurrence of such incidents in the schools. In a release, the SFI district secretary, M.C. Reddeppa Reddy, listed out schools in the district, which are being run under thatched roofs and asbestos sheets.

Defence staff disappointed

TIRUPATI: The defence services staff and ex-servicemen have expressed disappointment with the recently held counselling for EAMCET admissions. K.R. Raja Reddy, an ex-serviceman, who is also the district secretary of the BJP has said contrary to the system of holding counselling for open category first and then for children of armed forces personnel (CAP), counselling was conducted for the wards of defence personnel even before it was held for the open category.

BJYM leaders go on fast

TIRUPATI: Resenting the decision of the State Government to provide five per cent reservation to Muslims, leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) have gone on a hunger strike, demanding scrapping of G.O. 33. The BJP's zonal in-charge, G. Narayanaswamy Naidu, inaugurated the camp.

26 cases settled NIZAMABAD: In all, 26 cases were disposed of on Saturday at the Lok Adalat conducted in the Bodhan court. The Senior Civil Judge, Bajrang Babu, chaired the Lok Adalat in which 20 criminal cases and six civil cases were settled.

Power shutdown

ADILABAD: Power supply will be shut down in Adilabad town between 10 am and noon on Sunday due to works on the new sub-station near Government Polytechnic, according to a press release by the Assistant Divisional Engineer, NPDCL, Md. Mukhtar.

BJP plans dharna NALGONDA: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) district unit has decided to stage a dharna at the Collectorate on July 19 "to expose the Government's failure to solve the problems being confronted by the farming community in the district.''

Speaking to reporters at the party office here on Saturday, the unit president, Kalaasika Pavan Kumar, said the BJP State general secretary, Laxman, and the Kisaan Morch State leader, Kallem Bal Reddy, would participate in the programme, which, according to him, was planned to expose the "double standards" of the Congress, the Communists and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS).

Arrested on theft charge

ADILABAD: The two-town police on Saturday arrested Sk. Alauddin, a two-wheeler lifter and sent him for remand. According to the SI Komaraiah, Alauddin of Handicapped Colony in Adilabad was arrested on the charge of theft. On interrogation he confessed to have lifted the Bajaj Calibre motorcycle of M. Mallesh from the Sanjaynagar Colony on the night of July 9.

Students hold mock poll

KARIMNAGAR: Students of the Paramita High School in Karimnagar town conducted mock elections on the Paramita learners' foundation campus in Mankammathota on Saturday.

The students enacted the roles of the returning officer, the presiding officer, polling staff, agents, contestants, party leaders and voters and participated in the mock polling. The students cast their `vote' in the ballot boxes and there was counting of `votes' also.

In a press note, the institution chairman, E Prasad Rao, said the activities were aimed at creating awareness among the student community on the process of elections and the importance of elections -- how to elect, why to elect, whom to elect and educate the students on voting as their fundamental right and duty.
