Nobel laureate to
visit Hyderabad
This was announced in a statement here on Saturday by Krishna Murty Inguva, Secretary-General, Asian Organisation of Education for Children. Prof. Kroto confirmed his visit in a letter to Mr. Krishna Murty. Prof. Kroto is coming to India to participate in the three-day Asia Pacific education meet in New Delhi (October 25-27) where he will a chair a session on `IT versus education for children'.

The Minister for Information & Public Relations, Ali Shabbir Mohd, said at a press conference here on Saturday that the department had already released Rs.18 lakhs towards the Government share of the premium. Initially, the scheme would be applicable only to accredited correspondents, photographers and those from electronic media. While the yearly premium payable in each case was Rs. 1,400, the journalist would have to pay Rs. 700. The family could claim benefit up to Rs. 1 lakh per year, he said. The Minister said the Government, in principle, had accepted the expansion plan of the Gopannapalli housing colony of journalists near Hyderabad which would benefit new members. District Collectors were asked to allot house sites to journalists at district level, he added.

Chief Minister's office
The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, meanwhile, directed officials not to press into service schoolchildren during his visit on either `Rajiv palle baata' or other programmes. The Chief Minister also directed the departments employing people on contract to pave way for regular monthly payments. Meanwhile, the MIM leader, Asaduddin Owaisi, met the Chief Minister and thanked him for bringing out a GO on reservation for minorities.
CITU lists demands
He was responding to a memorandum submitted by a delegation of CITU State committee listing several demands. The delegation comprised Bhupal, P. Bhaskar and A.P. Nageswara Rao, secretaries of the union. Its demands include payment of minimum wages, setting up of labour welfare board and beedi workers' welfare committee, according to a press release. The CITU urged the Government to drop proposals to amend labour laws, scarp contract labour system and to strictly implement the Minimum Wages Act.

26 cases settled NIZAMABAD: In all, 26 cases were disposed of on Saturday at the Lok Adalat conducted in the Bodhan court. The Senior Civil Judge, Bajrang Babu, chaired the Lok Adalat in which 20 criminal cases and six civil cases were settled.

BJP plans dharna NALGONDA: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) district unit has decided to stage a dharna at the Collectorate on July 19 "to expose the Government's failure to solve the problems being confronted by the farming community in the district.'' Speaking to reporters at the party office here on Saturday, the unit president, Kalaasika Pavan Kumar, said the BJP State general secretary, Laxman, and the Kisaan Morch State leader, Kallem Bal Reddy, would participate in the programme, which, according to him, was planned to expose the "double standards" of the Congress, the Communists and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS).

Students hold mock poll
The students enacted the roles of the returning officer, the presiding officer, polling staff, agents, contestants, party leaders and voters and participated in the mock polling. The students cast their `vote' in the ballot boxes and there was counting of `votes' also. In a press note, the institution chairman, E Prasad Rao, said the activities were aimed at creating awareness among the student community on the process of elections and the importance of elections -- how to elect, why to elect, whom to elect and educate the students on voting as their fundamental right and duty.
