VISAKHAPATNAM, JULY 17. Organisatons like the AP Civil Liberties Committee (APCLC), Democratic Federation of Trade Unions, Atheist Society of India, Dalitha Vimukthi and Jagruthi Mahila Sanghatan (JMS), decried the proposed `Varuna yagams' to invoke the rain god, as they were retrograde. The leaders representing these associations also opposed any involvement of the Government machinery in the conduct of the superstitious rituals as it was unconstitutional. There were many earthly reasons for the water problem like failure of monsoons, deforestation, urban agglomeration, felling of trees, they pointed out. They alleged that the Congress, which had come to power in the State by opposing the BJP, Sangh Parivar and Hindutva, was now trying to ape them by organising Varuna Yagams in five places in the State. The JMS president, M. Lakshmi, the APCLC district president, T. Sreerama Murthy, the DFTU convener, P. Satyanarayana, the ASI leader, J. Ravi, and the Dalita Vimukti convener, S.V. Ramana, addressed the media conference.
