Basso wins stage, Armstrong in second place

LA MONGIE, JULY 17. Italian Ivan Basso won the first Pyrenean stage of the Tour de France on Friday, trailed by Lance Armstrong, who left main rival Jan Ullrich struggling behind.

Ullrich and another Armstrong rival, Tyler Hamilton, were left trailing on the punishing climb.

The effort vaulted Armstrong from sixth to second in the overall standings, 5 minutes and 24 seconds behind French champion Thomas Voeckler.

Basso and Armstrong finished in the same time, with the Texan in the Italian's wheel at the line. — AP
