MANGALORE, JULY 17. The Dakshina Kannada unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party has urged the State Government to reserve funds in the coming budget for allocating Rs. 5 lakh to each gram panchayat in the State. In a press release here on Friday, Pratap Simha Nayak, president of the unit, said the previous Congress Government had announced that the sum would be sanctioned, but it did not release the amount. Following the announcement, many panchayats prepared action plans for utilising the sum. Some even took up development works and were unable to pay the contractors. He condemned the assault on photojournalists and television cameramen, allegedly by the relatives of the accused in the rice scam on the premises of the district court here on July 12. Mr. Nayak termed the incident an attempt to curb the freedom of the press. The Superintendent of Police should take the incident seriously and ensure that presspersons could work without fear, he added.
