VIJAYAWADA, JULY 17. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) district unit has announced its decision to lay siege to Prakasam barrage on July 19 to protest against the "refusal" of the State Government to release water for the Krishna delta farmers. The siege would be followed by "road blockages" on July 21 at all the 50 mandals in the district, said the party spokesman, T. Premnath, on Saturday. He said that besides hundreds of farmers, senior party leaders including the district president, T. D. Janardhana Rao, Bolla Bulliramaiah, Kagitam Venkat Rao, Nadikudi Narasimha Rao, Aswani Dutt and N.Sudha Rani and others would take part in the siege. Farmers would block roads at the mandal headquarters with tractors and bullock carts on July 21 to seek immediate release of the water, he said. TDP leaders led by Mr. Janardhana Rao staged a dharna at the Nehru Chowk in Gudivada demanding release of water. The TDP accused the Congress Government of adopting double standards on the issue. They pointed out that while in Opposition, Congress organised several protest programs demanding release of water for the delta despite the water level receding to the dead storage level last year. But, despite substantial inflows into the reservoirs this year, the Congress Government was hesitating to release the water due to pressure from Rayalaseema leaders, they alleged. They questioned the logic behind Rayalaseema leaders' claim that water should be released to the delta only when the storage level reaches 834 ft at Srisailam. The leaders argued that the TDP Government had released water last year despite the level being just around 760 ft. This year though the level had reached 783 ft, the Congress Government was refusing to release water, they said.
