HYDERABAD, JULY 17. The Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) candidate, J. Deshya Naik, emerged the surprise winner in the by-election held for the Jangammet division of the MCH winning the seat by a narrow margin of 249 votes. The polling was held in July 14. Mr. Naik defeated his nearest Congress rival, V. Surya Naik. The MIM candidate polled 3,344 votes while the Congress candidate got 3,095 votes. The seat was, earlier held by B. Laxman of the TDP. His sudden death necessitated the bypoll. The TDP candidate Shanti, managed to poll only 1,891 votes. The Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) was third with its candidate, V. Shanker, polling 1,996 votes. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate, V. Pandu Naik, polled a poor 40 votes. The total number of valid votes polled was 10,457 and invalid votes 351.
