University of Kerala Syndicate decisions: The syndicate of the university, at its meeting today, decided to cancel the affiliation of those self-financing colleges under it, which do not admit students on merit and observe reservation norms in 50 per cent of the seats. Last year the university gave affiliation only to those colleges that signed an agreement stating that merit and reservation norms would be followed while admitting students in 50 per cent of the seats. The meeting also decided to write to the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations requesting him not to conduct admission to those courses for which the university has not granted recognition. The university has taken this decision after noticing advertisements for admissions to courses in some self-financing colleges for which it had not given recognition. Advertisements for these courses say that the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has given its approval for these courses. A press note issued by the university said the AICTE's approval alone is not sufficient to run a course in a college affiliated to the university. The university has also made it known that admissions to the management seats, too, for such courses should not be carried out. The university has cautioned students to take admission to a particular course only after making sure it has the recognition of the university. Doctorate granted: The syndicate has decided to grant doctrorates to K. Anup Krishnan, Binil Itti Iype Kandappallil, K. T. Arun (Chemistry), C. Krishnankutty Nair (Sanskrit), R. Rajiv, J. Vijayamma, P. Indu (Hindi), K.K. Venu (Physical Education), Mallika Sukumaran (Aquatic Biology), P.A. Najeema Beewi (Botany) and to K. Raghunathan Pillai (English). Date extended: The last date for submitting applications for lateral entry to the third semester of the B.Tech courses (management seats) at the University College of Engineering, Kariavattom, has been extended. Earlier it was announced that the last date would be July 19. The fresh date would be announced later. Further details can be had from phone 0471-2417574.
