This Day That Age
The last of the British Governors-General of Ceylon, Viscount Soulbury, left Colombo on July 17. He was given a ceremonial send-off climaxing in a 21-gun salute as he boarded the ship Oronsay bound for the United Kingdom. A 21-gun salute was also fired for the swearing-in of the first Ceylonese Governor-General, Sir Oliver Goonetilleke. The oath of office was administered to Sir Oliver at Queen's House by Sir Allen Ross on behalf of the Chief Justice of Ceylon. Messages of greetings were received on the occasion from leading statesmen of the Commonwealth. Prime Minister Nehru, in his message, said, "I offer you the cordial felicitations of the Government and people of India and my own. I entertain the hope that the manifold ties that have bound India and Ceylon from time immemorial will be knit still closely under your guiding care for the good of the two countries."
