Letters to the Editor
Sir, The fire in a private school in Kumbakonam which has claimed 90 lives so far should open the eyes of the authorities. The fact that the school was given permission to run though it had a thatched roof, only one entrance and no emergency exit, and that no inspection was held for three years smack of official negligence. At least now, the Government should get tough with private schools.
M. Nazeeruddin,
Sir, It is unfortunate that none could foresee the tragedy which took place only because of the negligence of the authorities. In a hurry to make India 100 per cent literate, are we giving the go-by to the safety of our future generation?
K. Priya,
Sir, Mere suspension of the officials concerned is not enough. The question of liability of the persons found guilty should be considered along with the question of criminal responsibility.
C. Ramesh,
Sir, To put the entire blame for the tragedy on the education officials is not fair. No amount of advisory and regulatory work by the authorities can prevent an accident if it is caused by human error.
N. Nageswaran,
