Letters to the Editor
Sir, I refer to the Tamil Nadu Government's move of closing down schools with thatched roofs. Pulling down thatched sheds is not a foolproof measure. Fire can raze down concrete structures also. The remedy lies in periodical examination of structures.
E.G. Rajendran,
Sir, A number of schools and colleges have been functioning under thatched roofs for decades. The indiscriminate closing down of such schools is not the solution. They should be given some time to replace the roofs. Not all the students in remote areas can go to other schools, which means they will lose one year.
V. Dayananada,
Sir, The kitchen was the central villain and not the humble thatched roof. It is true that poverty has for long impeded education in this country. But it is also time the mid-day meal scheme was redefined and the mechanism of cooking and distribution of food better organised.
B. Sridhar,
