Dharwad
By Our Special Correspondent
DHARWAD, JULY 18. The second-level training for teachers in creating awareness about treatment for cleft lip palate was inaugurated here on Saturday. It was inaugurated by Usha S. Joseph, Joint Director, Department of Public Instruction, Dharwad, at the S.D.M. College of Dental Sciences and Hospital. The college has been providing free treatment for cleft lip palate, particularly to those in rural areas, with assistance from SMILE Train, a U.S.-based organisation. Bhasker Rao, principal of the college, called upon the teachers to play a vital role in spreading awareness among parents and children in rural areas and make them realise that cleft lip palate could be treated. Ms. Joseph said the treatment would free the parents and children from the mental anxiety they would have otherwise undergone. She urged the teachers in rural areas to cooperate in extending the programme to needy children in rural areas. M.L. Vajpayee, paediatrician, said cleft lip palate was found in one out of every 1,000 children. Pallavi welcomed the gathering. Basavaraj Yakkundi proposed a vote of thanks.
