Tripura
AGARTALA, JULY 18. Polling for the three-tier panchayat elections began here today amid tight security, even as heavy rains lashed many parts of Tripura. Polling in the rural and semi-urban areas to elect 5,352 representatives in 513 gram panchayats, 299 representatives in 23 panchayat samitis and 82 members in four zilla parishads began at 7 a.m. Additional security forces have been deployed in the extremist-dominated and vulnerable areas to check militant violence, said G.K. Rao, senior official in the State Election Commission. No untoward incident was reported from any part of the State except for minor clashes between the ruling CPI (M) workers and the Congress, a senior police official told UNI.
