Hassan
By Our Staff Correspondent
HASSAN, JULY 18. Hemalatha Mahishi, writer and woman activist, underlined the importance of searching the potential of an alternative to the traditional family system before replacing it. Ms. Mahishi said it was imperative to create an ideal system to retain a cordial and congenial atmosphere for co-existence, while delivering a lecture on the "limitations and extremities of feminism" organised by the Zilla Lekhakhiyara Balaga as part of its fifth anniversary celebrations in Hassan on Sunday. She said that there were unexplored possibilities in human relations and it was imperative for men and women to search for an idealistic situation. She also said that it was impossible to find solutions to women's problems unless they become empowered. Problems had to be addressed with a balanced and sympathetic approach, she added. Complimenting the Karnataka Lekhakhiyara Sangha for providing strength to raise issues concerning women, Ms. Mahishi said that the Sangha assisted women writers to help other distressed women through a powerful network. Meera, who won the first prize for her short story collection "Aasegishtu Banna Hachchi", was felicitated by Ms. Mahishi and Sa. Usha, another poet. Vedavathi, a noted writer, who spoke on behalf of the judges, said that Dr. Meera had successfully presented the stress and boredom faced by women in a male-dominated society through the characters in her work. Prof. Sa. Usha, recalled her experiences as a writer and underlined the importance of being sympathetic to women issues. Leelavathi, a journalist, said that the Sangha would organize similar programmes.
