Kodagu's population put at 5,48,561

MADIKERI, JULY 18. The population of Kodagu district is 5,48,561. Of the number, 2,74,831 are men and 2,73,730 women, according to the district demographic profile released here on Saturday. The figures are based on the 2001 Census.

While there are 996 women for every 1,000 men in the district, Kodagu has 69,574 children below six years of age, with 35,192 of them being boys and 34,382 girls. The number of Scheduled Caste members in Kodagu is 67,422 with 34,038 of them being women and 33,384 men.

The Scheduled Tribes' population stands at 46,115. Of the number, 23,109 are men and 23,006 women.

There are 3,73,541 literates in Kodagu, of which 2,00,588 are men and 1,72,957 women. The literacy rate in the district is a healthy 78 per cent. There is a substantial difference between men and women in terms of the literacy rate. While it is 83.7 per cent among men, it is 72.3 per cent among women.

There are 1,30,110 households in the district. Of them, 1,12,510 households are in rural areas and 17,600 in urban areas. The rural population of the district is 4,73,179 with 2,36,270 men and 2,36,909 women.

A majority of the Scheduled Caste population is in villages (59,288 people), while there are 44,896 members of the Scheduled Tribe communities. Rural areas account for 3,14,040 literates with 1,68,908 men and 1,45,132 women. The literacy rate is 76.1 per cent.

Taluks

Women outnumber men in Madikeri and Somwarpet taluks.

Among the three taluks, Somwarpet has a population of 2,05,921 with 1,02,739 men and 1,03,182 women. The Scheduled Caste population in the taluk is 31,967 and the Scheduled Tribe population is 9,201. The overall literacy rate is 77.8 per cent.

Virajpet taluk has a population of 2,00,628 with 1,0,1105 men and 99,523 women. There are 984 women for every 1,000 men. The Scheduled Caste population in the taluk is 20,873 and the Scheduled Tribe population is 30,006, highest among the taluks. The literacy rate is 74.1 per cent.

Madikeri taluk has a population of 1,42,012 with 70,987 men and 71,025 women. The Scheduled Caste population is 14,582 and the Scheduled Tribe population is 6,908. The literacy rate is 83.7 per cent.

Towns

Among the towns, Madikeri, now a city, has a population of 32,496. There are 16,450 men and 16,046 women. The Scheduled Caste population is 3,174 and the Scheduled Tribe population is 550.

As many as 26,175 people are literates and the overall literacy percentage is high at 91.2.

Virajpet town has a population of 15,213 with 7,742 men and 7,471 women. The Scheduled Caste population is 1,487 while the Scheduled Tribe population is 219.

As many as 12,189 are literates with a literacy rate of 91.3 per cent.

Kushalnagar town in Somwarpet taluk has a population of 13,186 with 6,934 men and 6,252 women.

The Scheduled Caste population is 1,938 and that of the Scheduled Tribe is 254. There are 10,271 literates. The literacy rate is 88.8 per cent.

Gonicoppa town in Virajpet taluk has a population of 7,267, of which 3,813 are men and 3,454 women.

The Scheduled Caste population is 673 and that of the Scheduled Tribe is 127.

There are 5,484 literates and the town has a literacy rate of 87 per cent.

Somwarpet town is the least populated among the major towns with 7,220 people living in it. There are 3,622 men and 3,598 women.

The Scheduled Caste population is 862 and the Scheduled Tribe population is 69. There are 5,382 literates and the literacy percentage is 84.5.
