COIMBATORE, JULY 18. A post-harvest technology centre to focus on research and training in food processing was inaugurated at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) on July 15. The Agricultural Production Commissioner and Secretary, Agriculture, P. Baskardoss, inaugurated the centre in the presence of the Vice-Chancellor, C. Ramasamy, and McGill University professor G. S. V. Raghavan. Located at the Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute of the University, the centre has a pilot plant equipped with automated machinery for producing and packaging jam, jelly and squash, as well as ready-to-eat food products and beverages. A university release said that the centre would undertake collaborative research with McGill University of Canada, using funds from the Canadian International Development Agency to develop processes and machinery for preserving and packaging both fruit and vegetable products.
