SALEM, JULY 18 . Sanitary workers of various local bodies and other Government-based establishments have urged the Government to regularise their jobs immediately. At the recent Sanitary Workers' Conference, organised under the aegis of Ambedkar Makkal Iyakkam here, the workers from various parts of the State pointed out that a majority of them were working as casual labourers for more than 15 years on consolidated wages. They also drew attention to the plight of Chellammal, who had been working for 20 years as a sanitary worker with a meagre pay of Rs. 60 at the Government Adi Dravidar Residential School at Pechiparai in Kanyakumari district. She was now battling for life due to poor health with no assistance from anyone. They pointed out that due the nature of their job there were frequently attacked by contagious diseases. The Government, they demanded, should permit a sanitary worker to retire at the age of 50 with all retirement benefits. The Government was yet to fill up hundreds of vacancies in sanitary departments of various local bodies and other establishments, and must immediately fill them up. It should consider promotions for those sanitary workers who had passed Class VIII on seniority basis. They explained the anomalies in pay structures among those working in village panchayats, municipalities and unions. "The payment of pension benefits should not be delayed. The necessary implements should be supplied without any delay, and free houses should be given to them. The move to privatise sanitary work should be dropped and a separate welfare board must be formed for them. Mr. Vai. Balasundaram, the founder leader of the Ambedkar Makkal Iyakkam who presided over the conference formed a seven-member team to study their grievances and submit a report, to be submitted to the Government.
