Erode
By Our Staff Reporter
ERODE, JULY 18. Thatched sheds in more than 30 schools in Erode district were removed immediately after the Kumbakonam tragedy. Of the more than 3,000 schools in the district, over 30 are running higher standards in thatched sheds. In some matriculation and panchayat primary schools, the authorities removed the thatched structures on Friday night and some removed the same early on Saturday morning. The Collector, D. Karthikeyan, today ordered the schools that were running classes under thatched sheds to remove them immediately, failing which the recognition would be withdrawn. He also warned that action would be initiated against erring institutions. He also instructed the noon meal officials to remove thatched sheds, if any, in noon meal centres. Meanwhile, the Fire and Rescue Services personnel are visiting schools and instructing authorities to install fire-fighting equipment on the premises, even in terraced buildings. While, the Education Department officials are inspecting schools, tahsildars are initiating action against schools, which have failed to renew the stability certificate of buildings. The Collector also asked tutorial colleges not to erect thatched sheds and instructed the Education Department officials to inspect such colleges. Meanwhile, some school authorities said they had already taken steps to construct terrace buildings. They also urged the Collector to simplify methods of obtaining licence for building construction. Meanwhile, several organisations and associations held meetings, condoling the deaths of the children. Several posters and handbills were found pasted in many places, conveying grief to bereaved families.
