Telecom employees oppose hike in FDI cap

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, JULY 18. The three-day meeting of the Extended Central Executive Committee of the BSNL Employees Union (which began on Saturday) today called upon the workers to stand united and protest against the hike proposed in the Central budget in foreign direct investment (FDI) in telecom, civil aviation and insurance sectors.

This resolution was adopted unanimously at the meeting, attended by delegates from different parts of the country. It said the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government's decision to raise the FDI cap in the telecom sector from 49 to 74 per cent and also the proposed increase in the FDI from 40 to 50 per cent in civil aviation and from 26 to 49 per cent in insurance sector had been resisted and opposed by all sections of central trade unions.

The resolution said attempts be made to ensure withdrawal of the `anti-people and anti-working class' provisions in the budget through negotiations. If this endeavour failed to yield desired results a `countrywide united struggle would be unavoidable,' the resolution said.

The companies `who have been favoured with licences to operate basic and mobile telephone services' in the country had done nothing to take telephones to the villages. The proposed hike in FDI to the extent of 74 per cent in the telecom sector would ultimately offer scope for multinational companies to gain control over the telecommunication sector which could not be allowed under any circumstances, the resolution added.
