Probe by High Court judge sought into fire tragedy

By Our Special Correspondent

MADURAI, JULY 18. The All-India Federation of University and College Teachers' Organisations has demanded a "detailed and transparent enquiry" into yesterday's fire tragedy in a school at Kumbakonam.

In a statement here yesterday, the national executive committee member of the federation, R. Krishnamoorthy, said a sitting judge of the Madras High Court should conduct the enquiry. The Central Bureau of Investigation should also conduct a probe to bring the culprits to book.

Prof. Krishnamoorthy said July 16 would be remembered as `Black Friday' forever and urged the State Government to take steps to improve basic facilities in educational institutions on a war-footing. The federation conveyed its sincere condolences to the bereaved families.

The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, appealed to the State Government to take steps to provide minimum infrastructure at schools and noon-meal centres. S. Rethinavelu, president, said this was essential to prevent such ghastly incidents occurring in future.

The Tamil Nadu Janata Dal (Secular) wanted correspondents of schools and Education department officials to ensure safety of students in all schools. K. John Moses, general secretary, wanted the Government to sanction adequate compensation for the victims' families and proper medical treatment for the injured children.

The Students for Secularism urged the State Government to ensure effective supervision of schools to prevent such manmade disasters. S. Francis Xavier, president, appealed to the Government to provide adequate medical facilities, including psychiatric counselling, for the injured children.

The Society for Community Organisation Trust and the HMS-affiliated Tamil Nadu Electricity Board Employees' Association expressed anguish at the loss of precious lives in the school fire.
