VELLORE, JULY 18 . The Vellore Diocesan Council of the Church of South India (CSI) has requested the heads of all the educational institutions of the Diocese to immediately review the fire safety arrangements in their institutions, as a matter of precaution, in the wake of the fire tragedy that struck the students of a private school in Kumbakonam on Friday. A resolution to this effect was passed at the 13th session of the CSI Vellore Diocesan Council held here on Saturday under the presidentship of the Bishop, Y.William. The members of the council expressed deep shock and anguish at the loss of more than 80 lives of young school children in the horrendous fire accident. They recorded their deep sorrow and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved parents, and prayed to God for special support and comfort to them. By another resolution, the council requested all the heads of educational institutions run by the Diocese to take special steps to replace thatched sheds, wherever they were, with pucca buildings. The council thanked the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa for announcing the withdrawal of the Anti-Conversion Bill in response to the request made by the Christian community. The council authorised the Bishop, the officers and the executive committee of the Diocese to enter into a suitable Memorandum of Understanding with the authorities of the Christian Medical College and Hospital to revive and revamp the Scudder Memorial Hospital, Ranipet with the formation of an appropriate committee of management with necessary authority.
