Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JULY 18. A proposal has been finalised by the Government to ensure that schools running classes in thatched sheds were provided pucca structures, according to an informed source here today. An emergency meeting convened recently by the Education Minister with the officials of the Education, PWD, Fire Services and other concerned departments decided to form committees to assess the situation in Government and private schools in the Union Territory. The source said that immediately some Rs 50 crores would be needed to convert the thatched sheds into proper structures, as students should not be exposed to risk. Necessary instructions were being issued to all schools in Government and private sector. All schools in Pondicherry should have full-fledged structures as early as possible replacing makeshift arrangements and this stand of the Government would govern private schools also.
