Settle PLI claim

Sir, — Satyanarayana, a postman attached to the Housing Board Colony Post Office and holder of two postal life insurance (PLI) policies, (AP 117199-P for Rs.50,000 and AP 193798-P for Rs. 30,000), died in January last. The premium of these polices had been fully recovered from his salary.

His widow and nominee, S. Summa, submitted the death claim papers to the Chief Postmaster General, Hyderabad, on February 5. She has not yet received her dues. I request the PMG to find the reason for the delay.

Free air!

Sir, — Many of the retail outlets of IOC, HPCL and BPCL, particularly on the city outskirts, do not have air-filling machines and customers are forced to depend on sub-standard machines outside the filling stations which could damage the tyres and even the vehicle. Even in gas-filling stations, where such machines exist with a big board, `Free air', a nominal fee is charged. I request the oil majors to ensure that the outlets provided free air to customers.

Phone directory

Sir, — The last telephone directory for Vizag corrected up to March 31, 2001, was released in February 2002 by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited. Its publishers delayed the publication and the paper used was sub-standard. The BSNL promised to take action against the publishers. We do not know what has happened. It is now over three years and there is no sign of a new directory. Any delay amounts to deficiency of service under the Consumer Protection Act.

Botanical garden

Sir, — It is amusing to note the proposal of the Visakhapatnam Mayor that the old Central Prison site be given to the Municipal Corporation so that it can develop three-fourths of the land on the lines of Fateh Maidan for holding meetings and rallies and use the remaining land for construction of shopping-cum-parking complex and also for widening the Jail Road. The Mayor should note that it is not a vacant land. There is greenery on the vast area so much that the jail was almost invisible to passers-by.

There are thousands of trees to make it a deemed forest near the busiest Aseelmetta junction. While the public opinion is against converting it into a shopping mall, there is unanimous opinion that it should be maintained as a lung space by further developing it as a botanical garden on the lines of Lal Bagh in Bangalore.

Bar's obligation

Sir, — When Abid Hussain was the District Collector he addressed the Visakhapatnam Management Association. In the course of his speech he made a sarcastic remark against the Wakf Board leading to litigation. Eminent lawyer, D.V. Subba Rao, appeared for the Wakf Board, much to the chagrin of people like me.

Recently, the Vijayawada Bar Association resolved that its members would not defend the accused in the Sri Lakshmi murder case. A judge criticised it and pointed out that it was mandatory for advocates in England to accept brief from anybody seeking legal services. Now, I appreciate the wisdom of Mr. Subba Rao.

Sneha Sandhya clarifies

Sir, — I was shocked to read the news item (July 13) stating that Vintage Visakha, an organisation for elderly, had closed the Sneha Sandhya Day Care Centre.

The fact is that Vintage Visakha has nothing to do with Sneha Sandhya, which is by itself an exclusive welfare organisation for senior citizens. Its day care centre is functioning well in Pavan Enclave on Dabagardens Main Road, conducting devotional, spiritual, cultural and general entertainment programmes for the benefit of senior citizens.
