Dindigul geared to ensure safety in schools

By Our Staff Reporter

DINDIGUL, JULY 18. The Collector, S. Murugaia, today said the district administration had intensified its monitoring mechanism and geared the official machinery to ensure adequate safety to children in public, aided and government schools in the district.

Inspecting some schools in Dindigul and nearby areas, the Collector said necessary instructions were given to all village administrative officers, revenue inspectors, zonal deputy tahsildars, tahsildars, and union commissioners to inspect all schools in their territory and submit a report on the existing conditions and recommend safety measures.

A special team comprising the District Revenue Officer, project officers of the District Rural Development Agency and the Integrated Child Development Scheme, and the personal assistant to the Collector (noon-meal), had been formed to intensify the inspection of schools in the district. Besides, zonal officers in the rank of sub-collectors were deputed to expedite inspection in their respective zones.

All Anganwadi workers were advised to keep firewood away from the kitchen and the classrooms. Panchayat union commissioners should meticulously monitor damages and cracks in the walls and ceilings of school buildings and report to the district administration immediately. Powers were given to the commissioners to direct school authorities to rectify these repairs immediately. Orders were issued to install fire-fighting equipment in all schools with the help of the Department of Fire Services. The Education Department should take up this responsibility.

The Collector said the Anganwadi organisers would ultimately be responsible for the children's safety and that they should not leave the children under the control of the cook or Anganwadi assistants at any cost. Wardens of hostels maintained by the departments of Social Welfare, Adidravida Welfare, and Backward Class Welfare should not leave the hostel premises without obtaining prior permission from higher officials.

Stern action would be taken against officials of all departments even for minor faults. The Collector advised school authorities to remove thatched structures in their schools. The public were told to extend full cooperation to the district administration.

The Collector appealed to the public to donate liberally to the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund to provide compensation to the families of the children who died in the fire accident in Kumbakonam recently.
