JD (U) may review ties with NDA

By Our Special Correspondent

JAIPUR, JULY 18. The Janata Dal (United) is planning to reconsider its continuation in the National Democratic Alliance. The national working committee of the party, scheduled to meet in Delhi for two days from July 31, will review the present political scenario in the country and decide on its future alliances.

The Janata Dal (U) general secretary, Javed Raza, said the party's rethink on the issue was due to the widespread feeling among the party men that the alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party affected its (Janata Dal's) traditional vote base. "The Lok Sabha and the Assembly results gave the indication that the party's support among the Dalits and minorities has dwindled,'' he said.

"Hereafter we will try to concentrate on our vote base constituting of garib (poor), mazdoor (labour) and minorities,'' Mr.Raza said.

Asked about the BJP's offer to the Janata Dal to fight the coming Assembly elections from Jharkhand together, Mr.Raza said that the national working committee would take up this matter as well.

Mr.Raza who attended the meeting of the State working committee here today said the party would go it alone in Rajasthan in the coming panchayat and municipal elections as well as in the two by-elections, due from Merta and Behror.

The party's relationship with the BJP in Rajasthan is already under stress following the latter's refusal to allocate the reserved Lok Sabha seat of Banswara to it in the recent elections.

Mr. Raza informed that the State unit would launch a month-long membership drive from August 1. The party would also hold a "chintan shivir''(introspection camp) and a State level meeting in October, he said.
