Backward classes' team to

meet Manmohan, others

HYDERABAD: A delegation of the Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes Welfare Association on Sunday left for Delhi as part of the `Delhi chalo' programme seeking reservation in employment and 50 per cent reservation in legislatures for Backward Classes.

The delegation, led by R. Krishnaiah, president of the association, will meet the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, the former Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee, the Union Minister Ramvilas Paswan, the former Minister, George Fernandes, the BJP president, M. Venkaiah Naidu, and the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mulayam SinghYadav.

The association, in a statement, said Backward Classes would progress only when they were provided reservations both in promotions and in legislatures. The delegation comprised S. Venkatayya, vice-president, and V.V. Shyam Prasad, president, BC Employees' Welfare Association.

Bid to rob bank

NELLORE: Two persons made an attempt to rob the branch of South Indian Bank, a Kerala-based banking institution here, on Sunday.

According to the DSP, D. Narasimha Reddy, at 2.30 p.m. the two persons entered the branch, located on the first floor of a building near Nartaki centre, which was kept open despite being a holiday as the Manager was said to be attending to some pending work. The duo knocked at the Manager's cabin and on being told that it was a holiday, it claimed to have come in connection with some money transaction. When the manager came out, the two allegedly pounced on him and demanded keys of the strong room. When they failed to open the safe, the manager was again assaulted and was tied with a rope.

Having realised that it would be impossible to open the safe, the intruders left the place. The Manager telephoned to a friend, who alerted the police. They immediately rushed to the bank and admitted the Manager to hospital.

Medical counselling

VIJAYAWADA: The counselling for admission into medical and dental colleges went off smoothly at NTR University of Health Sciences on the second day on Sunday.

Admissions for 546 seats in Government colleges, 371 A-category and 68 B-category seats in private colleges were made during the counselling which continued till late in the evening. The dilemma over the admission pattern following the announcement of quota for Muslims and the fee structure to be followed during the current academic year, however, appears to be continuing as the university authorities did not receive any communication from the Government. The university authorities are optimistic that the Government would issue its clear guidelines on the admission process on Monday.

Students block traffic

HYDERABAD: Members of the Joint Action Committee of student organisations staged a rasta roko at the RTC cross roads here on Sunday demanding withdrawal of GO Nos. 184 and 185 and also the release of their cadre arrested in Vijayawada while trying to obstruct medical counselling on a similar demand. Traffic came to a halt for over 30 minutes.

Addressing activists, T. Sagar, SFI national council member, N. Satish Kumar, SFI State secretary, L. Shravan Kumar, AISF State president, and S.L. Padma, PDSU State assistant secretary, accused the Government of favouring private college managements. They said the GOs were in violation of the Supreme Court judgment.

"How can the Government allow students who did not appear for EAMCET to take admission in medical colleges," they asked. They threatened to intensify the agitation if the Government failed to withdraw the GOs.

Eight hurt in attack

ONGOLE: Eight persons were injured when rivals threw stones and later country bombs at them when they were travelling in a lorry at Bandeelabavi between Darsi and Kurichedu on Sunday.

According to the police, one Venkaiah and his supporters who have been lying in wait at a culvert for Nallapuneni Venkaiah and his four sons who were accused in Peddavarapu massacre in which six persons were hacked to death on June 21 last, attacked the latter with crude bombs.

They first assaulted the lorry driver, Venkateswarlu, with a sickle. Later, they threw bombs at the lorry. As a result, Nallapuneni Venkaiah's sons -- Subba Rao, Venkat Rao, Adinarayana and Hanumanth Rao -- the lorry cleaner, Sesaiah and two other passengers, D. Vengaiah and N. Narayana received injuries.

Tirupati hosts IMA State meet

TIRUPATI: The State conference of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the 27th managing committee meeting of the IMA's Professional Protection and Welfare (PP&W) scheme was held here on Sunday.

The meeting was led by G. Samaram, Chairman of PP&W, one of the several wings of IMA. It discussed the security of members in the profession in the changing scenario.

After the conference, a seminar on `Medico legal aspects' was organised.

The monthly meeting of the Tirupati unit of IMA was held later. The IMA state president, K.N. Sampath Kumar, secretary, G. Suresh, secretary (PPW), M. Sampath Rao and the Additional SP, P. Ashok Kumar, were among the invitees.

Office-bearers elected

HYDERABAD: The annual general body meeting of the Andhra Pradesh Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Trade held here on Sunday elected the following office-bearers for the term 2004-2007: A. Vijay Kumar (president), C. Nand Kumar (secretary), B. Surya Prakash Rao, Ganapathiraj Bhandari, A. Venkateswarlu and B. Srinivas (vice-presidents), Ashok Kumar Gupta, Ch. Krishna and Tangaturi Ramakrishna (secretaries), M. Srisailam (treasurer), V.V. Rambabu, K. Sivanarayana Murthy, V.V. Kasiviswanadham and Yada Anjaiah (committee members), according to a press release.

Farmer ends life

GUNTUR: Govindu Venkateswarlu (72) of Nuthakki in Mangalagiri mandal died after consuming pesticide on Sunday.

According to reports, the farmer's family said he had no debts and was growing vegetables in two acres of land taken on lease. They said he had married thrice and "squandered" his earnings.

Girl injured in bomb blast

KURNOOL: A girl, Laxmidevi, 7, sustained injuries when a crude bomb went off accidentally at Ankireddypalli village in Kolimigundal of Kurnool district on Sunday. According to reports, the child had removed a brick from the wall while playing, setting off the explosive, which was concealed in the wall. The police are investigating.

Cloud seeding in Nellore

NELLORE: The Minister for Agriculture, N. Raghuveera Reddy, said that Nellore district has been included in the cloud-seeding operations. In all 10 districts have been chosen for the purpose and the exercise is set to commence on July 21.

AISF plea

NELLORE: The general body meeting of All-India Students Federation (AISF) district unit, held here on Sunday, demanded the publication of names of 33 degree colleges, whose recognition was stated to have been cancelled by S.V. University, for not having requisite infrastructure. The meeting felt that failure to disclose the names would create confusion among students.

Protection for SCs sought

KURNOOL: The district president of Dalit Samakhya, Kommupalem Srinivas, has urged the district administration to take steps to protect scheduled castes persons in the district from growing attacks. The Dalit Samakhya conducted a meeting here on Saturday to pay homage to the victims of Chundur, Karamchedu and other places in the past.

Mr. Srinivas urged the Collector to declare Krishnapuram, Peapuly and Jnanapuram as sensitive villages following attacks on Dalits there. He also wanted the administration to constitute a committee to review the attack cases in the district. The organisation planned to undertake an agitation if the administration did not take steps, he said.

Polls to SC forum

TIRUPATI: The election to the district body of the A.P. Scheduled Caste Welfare Association will be held on August 15. In a statement here, D. Jayaram, who was appointed the Election Officer, said the nominations would be received till 12 noon on August 12 and the elections would be held at the local Challappa Masthry Memorial Ambedkar Bhavan between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Results would be announced the same day, the note added.

Nizamabad MP for Washington

NIZAMABAD: The Nizamabad Member of Parliament, Madhu Yaskhi, is participating in the eighth annual legislative conference of Indo-American Friendship Council at Washington DC on July 20. Mr. Yaskhi will be participating as a special invitee. The conference is being organised to discuss strategies to strengthen Indo-US relations. Mr. Yaskhi will be back in New Delhi on July 22.

New cable network

KHAMMAM: The Khammam MLA, Thammineni Veerabhadram, on Sunday inaugurated the `Citi Cable Vision', a new cable network here. The former Zilla Parishad chairman, Chekuri Kasaiah, hoped that the new cable network equipped with advanced technology would cater to the needs of both urban and rural viewers. The network chairman, Kethineni Babu also spoke.

Competitions for children

NIZAMABAD: The maiden children's competition organised by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) at the Munnuru Kapu kalyanmandapam evoked tremendous response from school going children on Sunday. The ISKCON representatives, Samba Das, began the competitions by holding the Krishna test, which had about 460 participants.
