Backward classes' team to
meet Manmohan, others
The delegation, led by R. Krishnaiah, president of the association, will meet the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, the former Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee, the Union Minister Ramvilas Paswan, the former Minister, George Fernandes, the BJP president, M. Venkaiah Naidu, and the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mulayam SinghYadav. The association, in a statement, said Backward Classes would progress only when they were provided reservations both in promotions and in legislatures. The delegation comprised S. Venkatayya, vice-president, and V.V. Shyam Prasad, president, BC Employees' Welfare Association.
Bid to rob bank
According to the DSP, D. Narasimha Reddy, at 2.30 p.m. the two persons entered the branch, located on the first floor of a building near Nartaki centre, which was kept open despite being a holiday as the Manager was said to be attending to some pending work. The duo knocked at the Manager's cabin and on being told that it was a holiday, it claimed to have come in connection with some money transaction. When the manager came out, the two allegedly pounced on him and demanded keys of the strong room. When they failed to open the safe, the manager was again assaulted and was tied with a rope. Having realised that it would be impossible to open the safe, the intruders left the place. The Manager telephoned to a friend, who alerted the police. They immediately rushed to the bank and admitted the Manager to hospital.
Medical counselling
Admissions for 546 seats in Government colleges, 371 A-category and 68 B-category seats in private colleges were made during the counselling which continued till late in the evening. The dilemma over the admission pattern following the announcement of quota for Muslims and the fee structure to be followed during the current academic year, however, appears to be continuing as the university authorities did not receive any communication from the Government. The university authorities are optimistic that the Government would issue its clear guidelines on the admission process on Monday.
Students block traffic
Addressing activists, T. Sagar, SFI national council member, N. Satish Kumar, SFI State secretary, L. Shravan Kumar, AISF State president, and S.L. Padma, PDSU State assistant secretary, accused the Government of favouring private college managements. They said the GOs were in violation of the Supreme Court judgment. "How can the Government allow students who did not appear for EAMCET to take admission in medical colleges," they asked. They threatened to intensify the agitation if the Government failed to withdraw the GOs.
Eight hurt in attack
According to the police, one Venkaiah and his supporters who have been lying in wait at a culvert for Nallapuneni Venkaiah and his four sons who were accused in Peddavarapu massacre in which six persons were hacked to death on June 21 last, attacked the latter with crude bombs. They first assaulted the lorry driver, Venkateswarlu, with a sickle. Later, they threw bombs at the lorry. As a result, Nallapuneni Venkaiah's sons -- Subba Rao, Venkat Rao, Adinarayana and Hanumanth Rao -- the lorry cleaner, Sesaiah and two other passengers, D. Vengaiah and N. Narayana received injuries.
Tirupati hosts IMA State meet
The meeting was led by G. Samaram, Chairman of PP&W, one of the several wings of IMA. It discussed the security of members in the profession in the changing scenario. After the conference, a seminar on `Medico legal aspects' was organised. The monthly meeting of the Tirupati unit of IMA was held later. The IMA state president, K.N. Sampath Kumar, secretary, G. Suresh, secretary (PPW), M. Sampath Rao and the Additional SP, P. Ashok Kumar, were among the invitees.

Mr. Srinivas urged the Collector to declare Krishnapuram, Peapuly and Jnanapuram as sensitive villages following attacks on Dalits there. He also wanted the administration to constitute a committee to review the attack cases in the district. The organisation planned to undertake an agitation if the administration did not take steps, he said.
