Nagapattinam
By Our Staff Reporter
NAGAPATTINAM, JULY 18 . The Nagapattinam Collector, M. Veera Shanmugha Moni, on Saturday convened an urgent meeting of officials of the Education Department, the police, municipalities, panchayat unions and panchayats and ordered a complete survey, within two days, of the schools functioning under thatched roofs. He said the thatched sheds in schools should be removed within a few days. The Collector said that the survey would cover all schools from primary to higher secondary level including noon-meal centres. He said there were nearly 1,100 schools in the district but several schools, mostly aided and private schools, were conducting classes under thatched roofs. Classes conducted under thatched roofs would be conducted in pucca structures till permanent asbestos sheds were provided. Education department officials said 25 schools in Nagapattinam and nearby areas had removed the thatched roof on their own this morning after seeing the fire tragedy at Kumbakonam.
