CHENNAI, JULY 18. The Indian Triathlon Federation (ITF) has initiated a two-week national junior development camp at the ICL Academy here under the guidance of the national coach from Australia Brett Mace. In addition to the seven triathletes already in the academy, 11 juniors have joined and their abilities (swimming, running and cycling) would be evaluated at the camp which will go on till July 24, according to Mr. N. Ramachandran, President, ITF. Four of the seven triathletes in the academy T.S. Kavya, Mani Singh, Mahesh Shinde and Syed Jabir are already in the top six of the junior elite category in Asia. Mr. Ramachandran said with triathlon already an Olympic discipline and included for the Doha Asian Games besides the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006, the aim was to ready a strong Indian squad in this three-in-one gruelling sport with an eye on winning medals. The ITF also hoped that the Military Games scheduled in Hyderabad in 2007 would have triathlon as a discipline. The junior camp, which will also have a three-day course for the trainees, specially designed by Mace and another Australian consultant Rob Pickard, would prepare a path for the rigors ahead.
