BANGALORE, JULY 18. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, has expressed profound grief at the demise of the Bidar MP, Ramachandra Veerappa. Mr. Singh recalled that Mr. Veerappa had actively participated in the freedom struggle, and in the Hyderabad Liberation Movement. "He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Bidar seven times, and also represented Bidar in the Legislative Assembly for one term. The 96-year-old leader had clarity in thought and action. He had clear views on State and national matters," Mr. Singh said. Recalling that the veteran leader had come to take oath as MP even though he was sick, Mr. Singh said it was a pity he could become the sitting centenarian in the House. The Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly and former President of the State unit of the BJP, B.S. Yediyurappa, said in the death of Mr. Veerappa, who was working for his people till his last breath, the nation, the State, and the BJP had lost a leader of vision. The Minister for Water Resources and Transport, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, in his message described Mr. Veerappa as a venerable parliamentarian, freedom fighter, and the epitome of uprightness in politics. Bheemanna Khandre, President of the Akhila Bharata Veerashaiva Mahasabha, said the State Government should construct a "Veera Soudha" in memory of Mr. Veerappa in Bidar. He said: "Veerappa was a leader beyond party affiliations, revered by everyone. He was a hero of the Arya Samaj movement, especially in the fight for freedom in the Nizam's Hyderabad. Once he had to be hospitalised for three months, after being brutalised by the British, when he was protesting their policies."
