BJP legislators ridicule Deve Gowda's remarks

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, JULY 18. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators, Aravind Limbavali, C.T. Ravi and Raghupathi Bhat, on Saturday ridiculed the President of the Janata Dal (Secular) and former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, for his statement that his party did not have the mandate to punish the corrupt politicians and officers.

Addressing presspersons here, they said the Janata Dal (S) had promised to punish corrupt politicians and officers if it was voted to power.

"Do you need a fresh mandate to implement your promise?" they asked Mr. Gowda.

On sharing seats in private professional colleges between the Government and the managements, the legislators alleged that the Congress had sabotaged the interests of poor and meritorious students by not presenting the case properly before the Supreme Court. They urged the Government to follow the Kerala model and subsidise the fee for poor meritorious students. It should release Rs. 65 crore for the purpose, they said.

The legislators blamed the Government for the hardship faced by students and urged the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka to announce the results of the entrance test conducted by it.

Disputing the claim of the private professional colleges that 25 per cent seats was insufficient to them, the legislators said that the colleges should be graded based on their expenditure and income and allowed to collect recurring expenditure.

The legislators criticised the Common Minimum Programme (CMP) of the coalition Government in the State and urged it to give a dole of Rs. 500 to the unemployed youth.
